Waiter, There’s a Flower in my Salad

A plant that I’ve never grown before, that I tried out this summer, is Nasturtium.

Throughout the season it looked healthy and interesting with its unique round variegated leaves, but it took its sweet time with any flowers. There was a single bloom in July and then nothing. That is until September … now it has quite a few.

There were enough flowers in fact, to serve some up in a salad. Yes, in case like me you didn’t know, Nasturtiums are edible.

Neither Nick nor I had ever tasted them, so I made us a salad using some of the leaves and flowers, mixed with lettuces, celery and cucumber. Then I made him wait while I took about a hundred pictures. Ok, I exaggerate, but it looked too pretty to just dig in.

Finally, some homemade dressing was ladled on and a plate was handed over.

Nasturtiums are quite delicious. They’re nippy like a mild cross between arugula and radishes, and not at all perfume-y.

Thank you for dropping over. Wishing you a happy Friday and excellent weekend to follow.
