The Book of Mormon at The Princess of Wales Theatre

I mentioned at Christmastime (in this post) that Nick had given me tickets to see The Book of Mormon at The Princess of Wales Theatre on King Street West.

The gift was a complete surprise, considering we have never been to a big musical theatre production together in the almost two decades we’ve known one another. That is not to say I wasn’t happy with the gift … I definitely was! The reason we’d never been to such a show before was due to his lack of interest, not mine. No doubt, his decision to get these particular tickets was based on the fact that The Book of Mormon is a comedy written by the creators of South Park.

Described by The New York Times as the “best musical of this century”, and having won many prizes and awards for its Broadway and in London productions during the six years that it’s been staged, you don’t need me to tell you that it was really good, but I’m going to anyway! We didn’t really know what to expect before seeing it and I think that made it all the better — the shock effect was in full force. It is so funny.

I was interested to read that the striking decor within The Princess of Wales Theatre is a commissioned project by artist Frank Stella. Its 10,000 square feet of paintings, which span the entire place, are considered one of the largest mural installations of modern times.

We had a wonderful time and were still laughing and singing bits of the songs the next day. I’ve told Nick that I’m all for receiving “gifts of experience” here on out!

Thanks for reading. I hope you have a great weekend!
