A Beautiful Brunch with Fine Friends

Sure, I was going for a bit of alliteration with that title, but, as illustrated by the photo above, I didn’t have to reach too far to come up with the B-word “Beautiful” to go along with the word Brunch when describing the lovely time Nick and I had on Saturday morning, at the home of Julie and Guy and their sweet sweet children Lila and James.

It was one of those cold drizzly days outside, but as soon as we stepped through the door, greeted by the sight of these much-loved people and the aroma of bacon cooking and coffee brewing, things warmed right up. The welcome was further enhanced when we were nearly bowled over by two-almost-three year old James, when he ran down the hall to say hello and give us a hug. Swoon.

Six year old Lila helpfully set the table. It was interesting watching her proficiently figure out the fact that mom had given her one extra plate than was needed.

Accompanying the artistically arranged smorgasborg, was a pan full of Anthony Bourdain’s recipe for Scrambled Eggs with Bacon, Chives and Sour Cream. Julie recited the instructions : Fry chopped bacon, remove it along with some of the fat, add lightly stirred eggs to the pan and cook. Mix in a spoonful of Sour Cream and Chopped Chives. Done and delicious! I made room for seconds.

↑ A splash of Baileys in our coffee, for the win. ↑

↑ The very reaction you hope for when a child sees the little gift you brought. ↑

↑ I mentioned to Lila that I’d heard she wanted to be an artist when she grew up. I’m still laughing at her response, that she planned to be an “art-eest” (an artiste, rather than a plain old artist.) ↑

Julie is a skilled knitter and the creator of one of Canada’s top blogs on the subject, Knitted Bliss. She is in the process of making a second set of the tiny detailed socks for a Christmas Advent Calendar, each stocking different, after figuring out last year that two kids = two calendars required!

Aren’t they special? I’d seen the story she wrote about them on her blog (in this post) but didn’t have a sense of just how adorably small they were. Lila and James will definitely treasure these their whole lives.

Julie and Guy’s home is filled with so many fun details and the children are so polite, cute and engaged. It was a visit that touched our hearts and left us feeling very welcomed and loved. I know I’ve mentioned it many times before, but I met Julie six years ago when she turned around and said hello while be both waited in a line-up. It just goes to show that you really never know where and when you’ll meet someone who will become “friends-who-are-like-family”. Here’s to that!

Thanks for reading. Wishing you a great weekend.
