How to Crochet a Star

Hello! Here’s one for those who enjoy crocheting. It’s a demonstration of how to make a star. It’s a short pattern, involving only two rows of stitches.

Depending on the thickness of yarn used, the stars may be small and delicate or chunkier and the size of your palm.

I’ll be back with another post showing how I used these crocheted stars in our winter décor. Update : See that here.

Note: I’m left handed. The instructions are the same if you’re right handed, except done in the opposite direction.

Crocheters who prefer a video tutorial or require a clearer picture of what I’m trying to say here, can find a quick video here :

How to Crochet a Star :

↑ Make a slip stitch and chain 4. Form a ring by slip stitching into the beginning chain. ↑

↑ Chain 2. ↑

↑ Into the ring, make 9 half-double crochet stitches. ↑

↑ Close the circle with a slip stitch into the second chain of your beginning “Chain 2”. You’ll end up with a circle of 10 stitches around and you’ll use 2 of those stitches for each of 5 points of the star. ↑

↑ Chain 1. ↑

For each point of the star : All stitches go into the next stitch away from the hook, (see series of photos below)

  • 1 half-double crochet stitch,
  • 1 chain stitch – let’s call that the “middle chain stitch”
  • 1 double crochet stitch.
  • 1 chain stitch
  • To form the point, insert your hook through the “middle chain stitch” and the top bar of the previous double stitch. Slip stitch through the three loops on the hook. (See photograph or video for a better description.)
  • 1 double crochet stitch,
  • 1 half-double crochet stitch.

Anchor the point of the star with a slip stitch into the next hole in the circle.

Continue around, forming 5 points.

↑ Beginning the first point : 1 half-double stitch, 1 chain (the middle chain stitch), 1 double stitch, 1 chain ↑

↑ To form point, insert hook through the “middle chain stitch” and the top bar of previous double stitch. ↑

↑ Slip stitch through all 3 loops on the hook. ↑

↑ Complete the point with 1 double-crochet stitch and 1 half-double. (Note, there is no chain stitch between them). Anchor the point by slip stitching into the NEXT hole in the circle. ↑

↑ Onto the second point. One half-double stitch. ↑

Continue around, forming 5 points.

↑ To finish, slip stitch into beginning “Chain 1”. Slip stitch again, tighten and clip yarn. Pull the end through the last slip stitch. Note where the hook is and that the star is “squared off” there – see below for how to fix that. ↑

To better shape the bottom of the star and define the bottom indent, weave in your end straight up and pull it a little. Weave in some more (so that doesn’t pull out easily). Clip the end. Weave in the other end.

Thank you for reading. I hope that, if you’re a chocheter, creating a star is in your future!

As mentioned, I used these crocheted stars in our winter home décor, so please come back for a following post, to see how.
