There’s a new shop in town for vintage clothing lovers, but it’s here for a good time, not a long time. Jack Lux Vintage of Montreal, have opened a pop-up shop at 536 Queen Street West, (just west of Portland on the north side), where they will be selling pieces from a collection of vintage clothes they got from the Centre National du Costume.

According to their site, the collection ‘was a costuming trust established by the Quebec Government to curate and identify a wide ranging (1920’s – 1990’s) and diverse vintage collection to be used by filmmakers and production houses that were shooting in the province of Quebec. In 2005, the organization was dismantled and Jack Lux was able to acquire the vast collection — which at last count included more than 200,000 items of men and women’s apparel and accessories.’

They opened the temporary Toronto store for three months on Wednesday, July 23rd, and I dropped in on Thursday. It was quite amazing to see so much great and well cared for vintage-wear all together like that. Each piece has a label sewn inside that includes the approximate years they were made, and a nickname to identify the piece.

So much stuff and such lovely people in the store, both on staff and shopping. Everyone seemed to really be enjoying the experience and there was an all ’round good vibe in there.

I came home with a dress from the 1940s, charmingly nicknamed Ginette. The tag says it was made by Mar Faer Frocks, for whom I can find no reference online. It is missing the original belt (I’m not surprised by that after 70+ years) but is in very good condition and even has a pocket.

I also got this neat blouse/jacket from the 70s.

To give you a feel for the prices, the things I got were each $20, which seems quite reasonable for such great one-of-a-kind items

I love what I found at Jack Lux Vintage and will surely be going back before they leave Toronto.
