A Family Tradition : Making The Mix

homemade-party-mix-snack

My earliest memory of Christmas is of being allowed to stay up and watch my parents make this snack, which we have just always called ‘The Mix’, but is also known as ‘Party Mix’ or ‘Nuts and Bolts’. Based on the kitchen we were in, I would have been about 2 1/2 at the time and I’ve had at least one handful of the stuff pretty well every Christmas season since.

I can’t really say that it is strictly a Christmas thing though, but in my family that is when we have had it. It would taste just as good any time of the year.

I don’t always make it myself but this year it came as a special request by Nick, instead of the cookies I’ve made in recent years. And who am I to deny a food related request from him, considering all the wonderful cooking he always does for me?

And I didn’t mind at all because I love the stuff. Not only is it a tasty snack, it is also relatively nutritious with its whole grain cereals and peanuts (that can be left out if there’s an allergy in your family).

Here’s how to make it:

Homemade Party Mix

Ingredients

  • 5 cups Cheerios (the plain kind)
  • 4 cups Shreddies Cereal
  • 1 1/2 cups peanuts or mixed nuts
  • 2 cups Pretzel sticks or pieces
  • 1/2 cup (regular salted) butter
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Celery Salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon each of garlic powder and onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne powder (optional)

Instructions

In the biggest bowl you have (or two bowls if you don't have a big one) mix together Cheerios, Shreddies, Pretzels and Peanuts.

In a saucepan over low heat, melt butter. Stir in Worcestershire Sauce and seasonings. While still hot, spoon over cereal mixture and toss to distribute well.

Lay the mixture out in flat pans and bake in a 250 degree oven for 1 hour total, in 15 minute increments, removing from oven and stirring well in between.

Let cool completely and store in a bag or covered container. It keeps a long time.

Note – these pictures are of me making a double batch, as I plan to share some. A jar of it makes a great little gift.
