Library Love : Books, Books and More Books!

reading on an ipad ebooks from toronto public library

My life as a reader changed on October 10th! That was the day that, before nearly pushing the "purchase" button on ibooks, I stopped and did a quick Google search >> Can I borrow ebooks from the library? The answer was, "yes, you certainly can".

I know that I'm not the only person who didn't know this was possible because I've been telling everyone I meet about this excellent privilege, and nobody I've spoken to realized it either.

One, Two, Three Chihuahuas – Our Recent House Guests

    three chihuahuas

Look who spent last week at our place! We dog-sat these three Chihuahuas for a friend while he was away on holiday.

I'm going to come right out and say I was a bit hesitant when Nick asked if we could do this. I mean, three dogs for a whole eight days! Being a committed cat-person with an allergy to dogs, I've never had one, nor any great desire to get one (I love dogs when they are other people's, though), but Nick reminded me that these were very small, short-hair dogs who were quiet and elderly. And he said that he'd do all the work involved.

We agreed that it would be ok with me, if it was ok with our cat Eddie.

We tested the waters beforehand with a series of visits, and all went well. Eddie is bigger than they are, so maintained his "king of the castle" status, and they had no problem giving him that.

Now that it's over and they've gone home, I will admit that I quite enjoyed having them here. They were such good dogs, sticking mostly to their little assortment of baskets and cushions. They spent the days in the living room and nights enclosed within the front entryway area, with some food, water and bedding.

You might be needing a Thank You card right about now, after all the gift giving that went on last month. In case you were wondering, according to the Emily Post Etiquette People, "The rule of thumb is that you should send a written note any time you receive a gift and the giver wasn’t there to be thanked in person." They go on to say, "But notes are not always necessary. If, for example, the gift is from a close friend or relative (and it’s not a wedding gift) you can email or call instead if you prefer."If you do decide to send something by mail, here's a Thank You card idea that should do the trick. It looks a little fancy with the hanging letters, but it's pretty easy to do and doesn't take long.

Shopping on Queen Street West : Yummi Candles (This Location Now Closed)

UPDATE : This Queen Street West location of Yummi Candles has closed permanently, however, there is still a store in downtown Toronto, at the Distillery District.———————-One afternoon last month, while Nick and I were walking along Queen Street West, I interrupted our conversation to ask if he had seen what I had. Was that a shop that was selling candles and nothing else, that we'd just passed? He hadn't noticed and we kept on walking, but my mind was on that shop. Then, a week or so after that walk, I was going through the myriad of brochures, flyers and pamphlets we'd recently received, that were piled on the little table in our entryway. As I sifted through it, mostly to make sure there wasn't a letter/card/bill stuck within the stack before I tossed it all in the recycling bin, a unique direct marketing mailing caught my eye. It was an 8 x 11 piece of printed card-stock from a shop called Yummi Candles.
