You know how there are some trips to the the thrift store where you find all kinds of good things, and then there are those trips where you find very little that you want to have take space in your home? The haul here today was from one of the better days. ...In a stack of clear pressed glass platters, this vintage amber coloured one caught my eye. I already have a little bowl that is the same colour, so could see this piece used with it to serve vegetables and dip.  Research indicates that it’s a plate made by Anchor Hocking between 1972 and 1975, in the Fairfield pattern.

City Walk : Going to the Game Store

This is a 'Use It Or Lose It' post, in that if I don't get it up now, it will soon look like very old news.

Since I've begun to blog I have found myself with stories at the end of each season that I didn't get up in time for them to be relevant so I just didn't post them. But this fall, I'm going to try to get them all up, so stay tuned for some pumpkin-roasting and cranberry-sauce-making even though our Canadian Thanksgiving (posted about here and here) was almost a month ago! But, there is still the American Thanksgiving coming up, and they eat Pumpkin Pie and Cranberry Sauce too, so phewww ... I won't be totally out of date.

So anyway, no, we are not still wearing tank tops, shorts and plastic sandals outside here in Toronto (although I never wear plastic sandals out on the street but that's beside the point.) While the weather has been very nice this fall, it hasn't been that warm for a while.

Making Things with Pressed Leaves : A Bookmark, Gift Card and Notepad

I was recently flipping through some old hardcover books and found a pressed red maple leaf between some pages, that I would have put there back when I was at school. What struck me was how the colour had stayed so vibrant. So I decided I'd try to capture and preserve some of the autumn colour that has been swirling around overhead and around our ankles these days. I did it by pressing, which dried the leaves at the same time, and then sealing them between some thick paper and regular old packing tape. The trickiest part was finding leaves that were tiny enough to fit under a single width of tape, my roll being 2 inches (about 5 cm) wide. While there are hundreds are huge leaves in my midst, the small ones were a bit more challenging to find.

Caturday Goes to the Dogs : Riding in Style

    dogs in a carriage 01

I actually passed by these three on the street the other day, but about 10 steps later, I turned right around and went back. I just could not resist getting a shot of some dogs riding around in a carriage.

Apparently they often travel like this when out running errands.

I particularly liked the necklace and the hair bows.
