    Moose Winooski’s … Say What?!

I was keen for a dining adventure after my mother suggested we go to a place called Moose Winooski's one day last week while I was visiting her and my dad (and their cute dog Kiki) where they live in Barrie, north of Toronto.  We had spent the morning hitting up some thrift shops (a post of the great things I found will be coming soon) and were ready for lunch. What a fun place it turned out to be!

I am just back from a week visiting my parents, who live up north. Any visit with them involves time spent with my second most favourite animal in the world, Kiki.

Scene One : It is a dark, cold and rainy afternoon, the kind of day that keeps people inside. But she has been indoors too much lately and needs to get out. She decides to go for a walk, taking advantage of the abandoned streets. With no real destination in mind, she turns a corner and enters a narrow alleyway, bordered by the backs of buildings on either side. Suddenly, like from out of nowhere, there is a swoop of wings and a huge bird is flying right towards her. It swerves right, passing so quickly, leaving no more than five feet between its outstretched wing and the woman's head. It lands on top of a light post and perches there, giving her a chance to snap a few pictures with her small camera. Walking away, her path is littered with pigeon feathers, blowing softly in the wind.

Colour Amongst the Concrete and Glass

After a couple of walks about town lately I noticed a prevailing theme in the pictures I was taking. After one too many grey days in a row (which thankfully have given way to some nice sunny days since), it seems I was looking for colour amid the beige and brown, without really realizing I was doing it.

A Friend Came Over for Dinner and a Movie

    me and andrea

As mentioned in Caturday's post (here) we had company last Sunday. Andrea came over to hang out, have some Mojitos and dinner, and watch a movie with us.

The drinks were made by Nick using fresh mint grown by me! Forgive me for repeating myself (after already mentioning this magical mint plant of mine in this story) but I am a little proud to be able to say that, for the first time, I managed to keep my mint plant going over the winter by bringing it inside and putting it near a window.

[For other plant enthusiasts reading, I let it sit outside until late fall, after it had gotten a few days of frost before bringing it in. It spent the winter in a cool room, in a north facing window, so the plant didn't get any direct sun, but the window is pretty big so it did get quite a bit of light (well, as much as it could given we have pretty dark winters here in Toronto). The growth over the winter was minimal and we didn't pick any of the leaves, just let it sit there really, watering about once a week. Then last month it obviously 'woke up' because it began sprouting lots of new leaves and growth. I haven't put it outside yet, but will soon. I also brought in my oregano plant, giving it the same treatment, but with less favourable results. It is still alive but doesn't look like it's thriving in any way.]
