A Summer Evening Ladies’ Party
On Wednesday I hosted a get together for my female friends. Aside from just wanting to have a fun party outside, I wanted them to meet and get to know one another. And for those who already knew one another, to give them the opportunity to relax and have a laugh together.
In all there were 14 of us on what turned out to be a perfect evening for the occasion. I worried about that because a few days earlier a rainy day was in the forecast, but it stayed away. We would have just moved it inside if it had rained but I had my heart set on making the most out of summer by having an outdoor party.
The night before I made all the food that could be made ahead of time. Since the party began at 6pm, with most people heading over straight after work, I made sure to have plenty for them to eat.
I found it to be a very good time and my friends seemed to agree, which was the whole point.

Warm Strawberry Sauce
Hello. I thought I'd start the week off with something sweet!
We had our friend Chops over for a casual dinner a few weeks back (pictures here) and I wanted to whip something up for dessert that was simple but still a bit more fancy that plain old ice-cream with fruit on it (although I quite like that too!)
This warm fruity sauce which elicited the words 'This puts the mmmm in yummmmy' from our guest. Yes, a grown manly-man said that ... I did tell him he would be quoted here and he was okay with it.

Caturday Goes to the Dogs : Here’s Kiki!
As is always the case, after I've been to visit my parents I return home with a whack of pictures of their little lady dog, Kiki.
For those who've not met her yet, she is a Deer Chihuahua (so is bigger than a regular Chihuahua, at around 20 inches long not including her tail). My parents adopted her a few years ago, as an adult dog who had been rescued from a puppy farm where she had given birth to many many puppies until she was deemed too old to do so any longer.
So we aren't sure exactly how old she is but do know she has a heck of a lot of spunk left in her! Not that you'd really see that in this series of photos, because I caught her during some downtime. Most of the time she is prancing and dancing and spinning in circles in the cutest way possible.

Recent Thrift Store Finds
As I've mentioned before, Nick and I have started a new thing lately ... he drives me over to the Value Village (which is too far to walk) and then leaves me there for an hour or so while he takes care of other errands. In this post I will show you the treasures gleaned in two of these recent mini-thriting-trips.In the first visit I spent $12 (7 1/2 pounds) on this haul of goods ...

Out to a Friend’s Book Launch
Last Thursday Nick and I had the pleasure of celebrating the release of a book of poetry called Tangle, written by my friend Julie.
Readers may remember poetry book launch we went to in the fall for another friend, Nyla (posted about here). Well it was in the line-up to get my copy of Nyla's book signed that I met Julie.
We hit it off straight away and had a fun chat that evening. She also has a blog on the topic of knitting, so the contact information we exchanged that night were the names of our respective sites and we've been keeping in touch since.
Julie's book launch was held at a place to which neither of us had previously been, called The Mascot on Queen Street West near Dufferin. It was lovely outside so we walked over, passing through a part of town we don't often get to. As we headed out I realized that Nick and I hadn't been on a long-ish walk together since the beginning of June. I love walking but most of the time I do it alone, so it was nice to have company and a good talk on the way to and from.
I loved the old-fashioned feel in The Mascot. While it was rearranged to accommodate this event, a peek at their website really makes me want to go back and have a coffee and snack there.
Covering one wall they had a very interesting collection of artworks which seemed to be all based on the theme of trains and, for some reason, knives. I can't say I understood the connection but really liked looking at all the elements.
It was quite dim inside with nice mood-lighting which was perfect for ambiance, but difficult for photo taking, so I used the low-light setting on my little camera, which fit inside the tiny purse I was carrying along with my other stuff, but still took pretty good shots considering the conditions. I love that thing and quite like the added vintage feel the setting gave to these photos.
