First Outing For My New Camera

    inside the horsehoe

Last Wednesday I joined my friend Izzy at the CD launch show of a person she works with. It was held at The Horseshoe, a place I have shown here before, most recently in a post about the Kate Nash concert last month (posted about here).

I wasn't familiar with the artist, Donovan Woods, but I went because I wanted to be a good friend to Iz who asked me to, and because I wanted to try out my brand new camera in the low-light setting of a gig. While folk music isn't a genre I usually listen to, it was quite excellent and I was glad I went.

As for the camera, you might have read in a previous post that I really wanted a new small camera to bring out and about with me, because the one I had was really old, and took blurry shots in low-light situations. Plus it was beginning to form a mind of its own and doing some weird things. I've wanted to replace it with a more current version of the same camera I had, a Canon PowerShot, and that's what I did. (For those who care for details, I got the Canon PowerShot ELPH 110 HS, from Henry's Camera on Queen Street East.)

And I love it. It takes nice clear pictures, has lots and lots of functions including a great zoom capability, and is actually smaller and lighter than the previous one I had. It's a perfect tiny camera that I can carry in the smallest of handbags, and still get good pictures with.

Here are some shots I took with it inside the venue, taken without a flash ...

    First Barbeque of the Year

On Friday afternoon the computer-server at the office where Nick was working went down, so he came home early. Honestly, the server did go down, and taking the afternoon off had nothing to do with the nice weather. With this bonus of unexpected time we decided it would be fun to pull the barbeque out from under its winter coverings and grill our dinner.Since we use charcoal, once we have things heated up it makes sense to cook extra and then have left overs. So for this dinner we had baked potatoes, grilled vegetables and shrimp, and for dinner tonight (Sunday) we'll be using the leftovers for pasta made with the vegetables and shrimp. While I quite enjoyed the first dinner, the left-overs used in a pasta dish is what I really looking forward to. It will be very similar to this pasta, but with the addition of grilled vegetables.

    Eddie Loves the Great Outdoors

    ed sniffing a bud

There is no doubt that Eddie's favourite season is springtime. It's funny how everything has to get a little sniff, including the tiny bud in the picture above.

If fact, he is outside right now, helping Nick with some yard work. I guess I should get out there and help too!

Food Friday : Fish Baked with Tomatoes, Olives and Capers

It was my turn to make dinner and I was in the mood to try something different with some frozen fillets of Cod. I am glad I did because it turned out very nicely. We both really liked it and will definitely be having it again.

I made a chunky sauce that included tomatoes, olives and capers, which I spooned over the fish and baked. The resulting dish gave plenty of sauce to spoon over the boiled new potatoes served on the side.

I made 4 servings so we ate it twice, warming the leftovers in the toaster oven the next day.

    Hipster Park

Today I've written about a place nearby called Trinity Bellwoods Park. I go there often, so you may have seen pictures of it before.

In researching an aspect of it recently (its impressive and carefully curated collection of tree species), I came across a feedback forum thing which included a discussion about this park and was interested to read all the negative comments people had left about it being unfriendly, elitist and overcome by 'hipsters', the word used as though it were a really bad insult.

To be honest I'm not exactly sure what being a hipster is and maybe I am one, because I choose to live an artsy lifestyle and like to hang put in this park.
