    Making it : Fall Wreath

    fall wreath2

Throughout the summer I was taking the clippings from our monster Wysteria Bush, and winding them into a wreath, as described here. The plan was to add decorations to this plain wreath throughout the year. It is Thanksgiving here in Canada this week-end, so I used the wreath to make a welcoming fall decoration for the door.

I wanted to use coloured maple leaves for this project but using real ones was out of the question, as they would just dry up and break off. Take this from someone who helped clean up after a certain Hallowe'en party where real leaves were scattered on the carpet! It looked great and was a terrific party, but, oh the mess it left behind!

So for my wreath decoration I bought a pick of leaves from the craft store, which I then took apart and created one sprig of leaves. Using craft wire, I attached a real branch to this, to cover the plastic part and make it look more natural. (Wire was the only medium for attaching that I used for the entire project, so I won't keep mentioning it again at every step. If you're doing this with children, be careful because the ends of the wire are very sharp (she says while looking at the pinpoint drop of blood on her pointer finger!). But you can use some glue if you want too.)

Cooking with Nick : Salmon Cakes with Homemade Tartar Sauce

Here's a nutritious, inexpensive and tasty recipe for Salmon Cakes that Nick makes fairly regularly, using canned salmon. It is quick and easy to make and the patties can be used as a meat/protein course alongside some vegetables or served in a bun like a burger with your favourite toppings. One can (213g) of salmon serves four people.

The homemade Tartar Sauce that goes so nicely with them is very easy to make and tastes great. It could be served with any of your fish dishes.

Giving New Life to a Torn Men’s Silk Scarf

Last week I decided to tackle a project that I'd been wanting to do before it got cool out, which was to fix Nick's favourite scarf. It was a vintage silk piece which had torn along both seams. By the end of last winter he was still wearing it like that, but it looked pretty ragged. His intention was to wear it out and then toss it. Of course, I couldn't just sit back and let that happen!

    Food Friday : Making Quiche

Some people take live action photos of their kids playing sports, or their dogs chasing sticks, or their toddlers dancing a jig. My sister-in-law takes awesome shots of people riding horses. Me? I take action shots of my husband cooking! He's so quick in the kitchen that I have to be really fast to keep up with him.
