Do You Mean Tomorrow, Tomorrow?
When Nick called up the stairs to me yesterday, saying that he was going to invite his buddy over for lunch tomorrow (which was today), my immediate instinct was one of reluctance. My feeling was that it was much too short notice. But he thought otherwise, reminding me that we already had the spinach lasagna prepared and we could augment it with a green salad, and garlic bread. Dessert was also already done too, in the form of some squares I had made on the week-end.
Interesting Building : The King Edward Hotel
I went out for lunch with my friend Paige last week, over in the King and Yonge Street area. She is someone I used to work with, and though Nick has heard a lot (of good things!) about her, he had never met her. So he came with me, to say a quick hello before she and I headed into the restaurant. Then he went off on his own and did some shopping on Yonge Street.
The place that Paige had picked for lunch was right across the street from The King Edward Hotel. We arrived a bit early and were talking on the street when I pulled out my camera to take some shots. For fun, I went to take a 'one armed self-portrait' picture of the two of us, when a friendly business man offered to take a picture for us. I think we probably looked like tourists, trying to get a shot of our hotel! Anyway, he took a couple for good measure, and though they were a bit out of focus because I hadn't changed the settings properly, I'm happy to have them!
Merry Gothmas : Making a Black and Red Wreath
I have mentioned in the past that our neighbourhood has gradually changed into one where people are hanging wreaths on their doors. Wanting to get in on this party, this past summer I began a project involving a Wysteria Vine base I made from garden cuttings, and a series of wreaths I would make throughout the year, using this base. So far I have made two, an Autumn and a Halloween wreath. (I'll put links at the bottom of this post if you're interested in seeing them.)
Here is my Christmas wreath. It was inspired by the spool of red, black and white ribbon I found. I re-used the black boa-feather base from our Halloween wreath (which I made by attaching a feather boa to a wreath form with pieces of craft wire, every few inches), and added some other bits of black and red notions I had, attaching them with crafting wire. I finished the wreath by stringing three plain matte red ornaments on black wool.
[Aside ... ok Eddie, I'm getting to your part. I know, I know ... Saturday is Caturday, so it is your day on the blog today. And you did help make this wreath. I just need to type all this before you get your turn ... hold on a minute, Mr. Bossy-pants.]
Food Friday : Leek and Potato Soup
This week's food post will feature a delicious (and quick) Leek and Potato Soup, that Nick made for dinner on Tuesday. It is vegetarian, and he served it with a grating of cheddar cheese for added protein. It was so good that it seemed to be something that was difficult to make, however it is quite simple, and really quick. I was at my computer as he finished preparing it, and was (pleasantly) surprised when I was called for dinner as quickly as I was!
And if you're wondering about how substantial having only soup for dinner is, I felt satisfied and wasn't craving a snack before bed. The soup had been enough!
An Old Blanket Gets a New Life – Felting Pure Wool
UPDATE : 10 Years later - A decade has passed since I wrote this post. We’re still using this lovely blanket, washing and drying it in the home machines a couple of times a year. You can see how nice it still looks in this (short) new video. And then, start looking for old pure wool blankets at the thrift store, or pull one out of your cupboard and start using it without worrying about the cost of dry cleaning!
Also, there is a new blog post on the subject and some photos of the blanket 10 years later, found here.
—————————————-
I bought a vintage red pure wool blanket from Ebay 5 years ago. That Christmas, we had family staying over at our place, and I used it on the bed for my preteen nephew. In the morning, I overheard him say to my mom in a joking way, "Aunt Louise gave me the prickliest blanket ever!" He was laughing but I got the hint that the blanket was quite scratchy.
So, it has been stored in the linen closet since. Then recently, I noticed that my mister, Nick, had found it and put it in the cat's bed. That was a good idea for our much loved Eddie, but I wanted to try something out first, before relegating it to a pet blanket; I was going to attempt to make it feel softer by felting it.
