Bits and Pieces : July 2012

Hello hello! Here are my attempts at artistic photography for July. It's my monthly entry where I post random photos I've taken that would otherwise not see the light of day. I try to only include interesting shots, so I hope you like them!

    ‘stat chu, Eddie?

    ed with cat statue 08

We would like to have another cat but our Eddie is not so good with other cats (though he is very friendly with people and fine with dogs). Where felines are concerned he tends to be very territorial and any cat who steps into our yard is quickly shown the way out.

The thing is that he doesn't win any fights that he gets into because when we adopted him from the streets he had already been de-clawed on his front paws. There's that plus he is getting old now (though we have no idea how old, but we have had him for about 10 years already). When he does get into an altercation he is the one who gets more roughed up, though thankfully never seriously so. His worse injury is a little cut in his left ear.

So while we would have loved to get another cat, I'm afraid that Ed is one of those pets who "do best in a one cat household". However these pictures prove that he doesn't dislike all cats. He gets along just fine with his friend, Statue -- Stu, for short.

Food Friday : Avocado Bean Spread (or Dip)

Always on the lookout for healthy snack or mini-meal ideas, I have come up with a new favourite! It's a spread made of avocado, white beans (Cannellini or kidney), and tomato. Combined with heart-healthy olive oil and vitamin C rich lemon, this is as nutritious as it is delicious. It can also be served as a dip for vegetables or tortilla chips.

This recipe makes about 3 cups ... feel free to halve the recipe if that's too much for you. We just kept in the the refrigerator and snacked on it over a few days.

    DIY Customized Bookmark II

Here is a DIY for a customized bookmark I made this week for Nick (obviously! lol)As I mentioned in yesterday's post here , he requested a bookmark recently, so I got busy making him one. While I never seem to get stumped on making stuff for females, I find it a challenge to make manly looking things. I had to think about this task for a while before the idea came to me.I used a page from an old paperback that I rescued from the trash, in spite of its broken spine and missing pages, because I liked the way the pages had aged. Paired with some dark brown card stock, it made something quite suitable for a man, I'd say! But changing the background colour would make it good for a woman too.I revisited an idea I recently used to make the name-plate for this customized notebook. It is a way of laminating smaller pieces of paper using regular packing tape. It seals things up perfectly, so the bookmark will last much longer than plain unprotected paper would.Supplies for a Handmade Customized Bookmark:- a page from an old book or magazine.- a print-out of the word you want to use, sized appropriately. The simple font I used is Arial, and I sized the word to be 5 inches tall.- a piece of bookmark size heavy paper. Note, this must be narrower than your packing tape.- three pieces x 8 inches of coordinating embroidery floss.- small bits of two sided tape and regular sticky tape.- two pieces packing tape, at least 3 inches longer than your bookmark will be.- A sharp cutting blade, ruler, pencil, scissors, hole-punch and cutting mat of some sort.

    Watching in Amazement

    at 3d movie b

After only ever having gone to the movies together once in the almost 14 years that we've known each other, suddenly we have gone to two within the same month! We happened to have been gifted with passes to see 4 movies together this year so we are using them up. And have really been enjoying them too.

The first movie we saw was The Hunger Games, which I talked about here. That was my choice of films, since I had just finished reading the book. So this time, it was Nick's turn to choose. He wanted to see the Ridley Scott directed movie called Prometheus. It's a sci-fi in the vein of the Alien series. When we arrived I was slightly disappointed to hear that the movie was in 3D. Having been out of touch with movie-going, I thought that this meant dawning those flimsy cardboard eye-glasses with one blue side and one red side, which never seemed to work very well for me. I was not yet familiar with the new world of 3D movies, that involve the wearing of sturdy special dark glasses. This new technology is absolutely AMAZING! I can't stress enough how cool the 3D effect is. Stunning.
