On Sunday we went to The Factory Theatre to see a matinee showing of a play called Oil and Water. We both loved it. Ahem ... I did not shed a tear inside that theatre. Oh ok, maybe I did. The story was so interesting, depicting the true event of a 1942 shipwreck of an American vessel, the USS Truxton, off the coast of Newfoundland, and how the people of Newfoundland came to help. The play particularly focused on the experience of Lanier Philips, the only African American sailor to survive (in all 46 men lived of the 156 who were on-board), and his warm interaction with these isolated people who had never before seen a black person.Mr. Philips was later quoted as saying he had never heard a kind word in his life from a white person until then. Lanier Philips recently died in March 2012 at the age of 88, just weeks after he had returned to Newfoundland to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the accident.Following the play, the audience was invited to see a slide show of the actual photographs of the event and the aftermath, taken by an amateur photographer. I'm sorry I didn't write down her name and can't seem to find it online, but the pictures she took were very striking, and as one can imagine quite a feat to capture back in '42.There is a lot on the internet about this whole story, if you're interested in learning more. An interesting side-note to this is that back when this event occurred Newfoundland was not yet part of Canada, only joining in March of 1949.The play was so well done and we were happy to be there, having won the tickets as part of
our big raffle win at a Toronto Fashion Week event back in March, Dare to Wear Love. Unfortunately for Toronto audiences, Sunday was the last day it was being staged here, however it is touring to Calgary and Newfoundland & Labrador later in the summer. The weather was quite lovely so we popped out to the beautiful courtyard during intermission.

Monday rolls around again and I am participating in the Much Love Monday link-up over at Anna's Much Love.
Loulou is a nickname for my given name, which is Louise. And my favourite sandwich is a fried broken-yolk easy-over egg with melted cheese, between toast made with Nick's homemade bread. Then I add just the right amount of hot sauce (I like Matouk's) and a daub of ketchup.
Nick knows I love them so makes them once a month or so. And when I ask him what we're having, his reply is "Louise Sandwiches". Such a dish in your home probably goes by another name, but no matter what it's called, it is something I love.
And yes, we do have these heart-shaped egg makers, which were a fun gift from my sister!
Happy Monday my friends. Hope it's a good one.

Greetings! I know my cat Eddie had to relinquish Caturday to a guest cat last week-end, but he doesn't get his turn again this week-end. He's a bit mad about that.
Instead I'm going to post some cool-cats of a non-alive variety. I've been taking these images over the past few months whenever I came upon something that fit the cat theme.

For this week's food post I thought I'd talk about fish, specifically a new-for-us recipe, "Lemon Sole".
As mentioned last week, we don't eat much meat. However we do eat fish, and until trying this recipe recently the fish we ate was always salmon. We love how it tastes and also that it is farmed on Canada's west coast, so is sustainable. But even with the myriad of ways to prepare salmon, we were eager to branch out and try other types of fish. We decided to give sole a try, because we found that it had been certified as being sustainable by the Marine Stewardship Council ... don't want to contribute to anythings extinction!
And the very first attempt, using
this recipe for Lemon Sole, that we found at Food Network Kitchens was a winner. It was given 5 out of 5 stars and really was so delicious; we will definitely be making it again.

On Sunday night we jumped into a cab and headed out to the Kina Grannis concert at the Phoenix Music Theatre. Afterwards Nick, who had gone along for the ride, said he really appreciated her talent and the fact that she had packed the club single-handedly, but that the music was not so much his style. As for me, I loved every second of the show, including the sing-a-long.Readers will know that we were out at another concert on Wednesday night too, which happened to be at the same club. For the previous show I had worn a coat because it was still pretty cold out, and I checked it at the door. Well, we ended up having to wait a good hour in line to retrieve it at the end of the show so this time I opted for no coat. However it was still cool out so to keep warm enough getting there I brought the scarf along with me, which I just smushed into my pocket upon arrival.
